The area grew out of J.C. Nichols' Country Club District, begun in 1905. The first Brookside Shops opened in 1920 at 63rd Street and Brookside Boulevard, making it one of the country's earliest purpose-planned, trolley-accessible shopping districts — predating the Country Club Plaza. 'Brookside' is a customary rather than legally bounded name describing several adjoining subdivisions around the shops, so boundary descriptions vary; a common approximation runs from 55th Street south to Gregory Boulevard, between Ward Parkway and Troost Avenue.
