Overview
Grain Valley is a city in eastern Jackson County on Interstate 70, immediately east of Blue Springs (its interchange is Exit 24 at Main Street/Buckner-Tarsney Road). One of the metro's faster-growing eastern communities, it had about 16,900 residents as of 2025 — roughly 8% growth since 2020 — and sits about 16 miles, a 22-minute drive, from Lee's Summit.
The community formed near the railroad in 1878 when the settlements of Pink Hill and Stony Point consolidated, and it incorporated in 1884; the name reflects the area's grain production and valley geography. Its historic downtown follows Main Street around the railroad — a small commercial district the city has been revitalizing with facade grants.
Housing & Prices
Grain Valley is principally a newer suburban, single-family community — its comprehensive plan describes a bedroom community with starter, patio, higher-density, and upper-end detached homes. Most housing is relatively new (the population jumped from about 5,200 in 2000 to nearly 12,900 in 2010), with the older town core holding scattered early-20th-century bungalows and newer subdivisions offering ranches, split-levels, two-stories, patio homes, and townhomes. Construction remains active — a January 2026 plat added 66 more single-family lots.

Getting Around
Interstate 70 runs east–west through the middle of Grain Valley — the primary connection west to Blue Springs and Kansas City — with the main interchange at Exit 24 (Main Street/Buckner-Tarsney Road). Buckner-Tarsney Road, called Main Street through town, is the main north–south arterial, signed Route AA/BB at I-70. Downtown Kansas City is roughly 23 to 24 miles west (about a 24-minute drive off-peak) and Lee's Summit about 16 miles (22 minutes).
Kansas City International Airport (MCI) is on the order of 34 miles away on the metro's north side.

Armstrong Park, on Main Street in the heart of town, is a roughly 10-acre community park with playgrounds, shelters, a gazebo, skate park, lighted ballfields, and a walking trail. The city's trail network includes the Blue Branch Creek Trail and several neighborhood connectors, and the city owns nearly 50 acres near the historic Sni-A-Bar Farms site — a former nationally known cattle-breeding farm — proposed for a future recreation campus.

Shopping and dining concentrate around the I-70/Main Street interchange and along Buckner-Tarsney Road and SW Eagles Parkway, with retail nodes such as Grain Valley Marketplace and Old Towne Marketplace mixing local cafes and Mexican dining with national chains.

The signature annual event is the volunteer-run Grain Valley Fair at Armstrong Park on the first weekend of September after Labor Day, with a community parade, vendors, live music, and a car show, alongside downtown First Fridays through the year.
