Independence is a city in Jackson County, Missouri, on the eastern edge of the Kansas City metro near the I-70/I-470 interchange. With about 122,000 residents, it's the fifth-most-populous city in Missouri.
The city carries deep history: Independence Square and the historic Truman Courthouse served as a jumping-off point for the Santa Fe, California, and Oregon Trails, and Independence was the home of Harry S. Getting Around
Independence is served by I-70 (east–west), I-470, US-24, and Route 291. Downtown Kansas City is roughly 14 miles west — about 20 minutes in light traffic — and Lee's Summit is about 16 to 20 miles south, linked directly by I-470.
Kansas City International Airport (MCI) is roughly 30 to 35 miles away, typically a 35- to 50-minute drive.
