Overview
Liberty is the county seat of Clay County, Missouri, part of the Kansas City Northland north of the Missouri River. Platted and chosen as county seat in 1822 and incorporated in 1829, it had about 31,000 residents as of 2024.
Its historic core centers on Historic Liberty Square, a courthouse commercial district on the National Register, and the city is home to William Jewell College (chartered 1849). Landmarks on and near the Square include the Jesse James Bank Museum — site of what's described as the nation's first successful daylight peacetime bank robbery, in 1866 — and Historic Liberty Jail.

Liberty pairs a historic residential core around the Square with substantial newer subdivisions on its edges. Preservation surveys document homes across several eras — settlement-period log and Greek Revival houses, a late-1800s wave rich in Queen Anne and National Folk styles, and early-1900s Prairie, Craftsman, Foursquare, and Tudor Revival homes (well represented in the Dougherty–Prospect Heights district). Outside the historic areas, detached single-family homes predominate in newer subdivisions such as Tapp Farm and Clay Meadows.

Liberty is served primarily by Liberty Public Schools (Liberty 53), an open PK–12 district covering roughly 85 square miles of Clay County — its lines don't match city or ZIP boundaries.
School attendance boundaries vary by address and grade level, so buyers should confirm the exact assignment through the district's boundary tool before relying on it.
Getting Around
Liberty sits at the junction of I-35 and US-69, with Missouri Routes 152 and 291 also serving the city. Downtown Kansas City is about 15 to 16 miles away — roughly 20 to 30 minutes off-peak.
A Northland advantage: Kansas City International Airport (MCI) is relatively close, about 20 miles and roughly 25 minutes in light traffic.

The 146-acre Capitol Federal Sports Complex (opened 2002) offers turf ballfields, soccer fields, ponds, playgrounds, and walking trails. Stocksdale Park adds 112 acres with mountain-bike single-track, disc golf, and a dog park, and the Martha Lafite Thompson Nature Sanctuary provides an interpretive center and native-habitat trails.

Historic Downtown Liberty Square supports locally oriented shops and restaurants — Visit KC counts more than 30 shops across downtown and the nearby Corbin Mill area — with dining on and around the Square.
Events & Community
The Historic Downtown Liberty Farmers' Market runs around the Square on Saturdays from May through October, and the annual Liberty Fall Festival draws crowds to the historic downtown each fall.
