Overview
Oak Grove is a small city on Interstate 70 at the eastern edge of the Kansas City metro, about 27 to 28 miles east of downtown and east of Grain Valley and Blue Springs. It straddles two counties — roughly 94% in Jackson County and 6% in Lafayette County — with its I-70 interchange at Exit 28.
A post office opened here in 1840 at a settlement first called Lickskillet; the town was platted in 1878 and incorporated in 1881, named for a grove of oak trees. The Census Bureau estimated about 9,370 residents as of 2025 (up from 8,157 in the 2020 count), and the county describes it as keeping a small-town atmosphere in a rural setting while staying connected to the metro.

Oak Grove's housing combines older in-town homes near the traditional downtown with newer subdivisions at the developing edges. Detached single-family houses are the predominant form (about 73% of units), spanning pre-1939 homes through recent builds with a median construction year around 1987 — commonly ranches, split-levels, and traditional two-stories. Newer growth includes subdivisions like Oaks of Edgewood and North Creek, and larger lots and acreage are more common at the rural fringe.

Getting Around
I-70 and US-40 are the main east–west connection, with Oak Grove's Exit 28 linking to Route F (Broadway) and Route H. Downtown Kansas City is about 27 miles west — roughly a 29-minute drive off-peak — with central Blue Springs about 10 miles (10–15 minutes) and Lee's Summit about 15 miles (20–30 minutes).
Kansas City International Airport (MCI) sits on the far northwest side of the metro, opposite Oak Grove, so it's a longer drive — roughly 45 to 55 minutes off-peak.
