Living in Prairie Village & Mission Hills.

Two adjacent inner-ring Johnson County suburbs just across the state line from the Country Club Plaza, Prairie Village and Mission Hills share Country Club District roots — planned postwar neighborhoods in one, estate streets in the other. Here's a general guide to the two.

Overview

Prairie Village and Mission Hills are adjacent inner-ring suburbs in Johnson County, Kansas, just across the state line from Kansas City's Country Club Plaza. Both grew out of the J.C. Nichols Company's Country Club District. Prairie Village was platted in 1941, built out largely after World War II, and recognized as a city in 1951 (about 23,000 residents).

Mission Hills developed earlier as a low-density, estate-oriented extension of the district, much of it built in the 1910s–1930s around curving streets and landscaped parkways associated with planner George Kessler. It incorporated in 1949, is home to the Kansas City Country Club, and had about 3,600 residents in 2020.

Housing & Prices

The two cities are different scales of the same Country Club District lineage. Prairie Village is chiefly a planned postwar community of comparatively compact lots — one-story ranches, Cape Cods, Minimal Traditional, and Colonial Revival–influenced homes, often brick with side-gabled roofs and dormers. Mission Hills is defined by larger lots and custom-built estate homes, winding parkways, generous setbacks, and stone or brick entrance gates, with Tudor, Colonial, Mediterranean, and Neoclassical Revival styles and masonry construction.

Kansas City International Airport (MCI) is roughly 27 miles from Prairie Village, about a 38-minute drive.

Lifestyle

Daily life here blends a neighborhood shopping district, an extensive park system, and the culture of the nearby Plaza.

Shops & Parks

The Shops of Prairie Village is the main neighborhood shopping district, with restaurants, cafés, and specialty retail. Prairie Village maintains more than a dozen parks — Harmon Park, Franklin Park, and Meadowbrook Park among them — while Mission Hills is defined by landscaped residential streets and park-like public spaces overseen by its Park Board.

Dining & Culture

The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art and the Country Club Plaza's shopping and dining are just across the state line in Missouri, roughly 5 to 7 miles away, while the Shops of Prairie Village offer local dining within Prairie Village itself.

Events & Community

Prairie Village hosts recurring events including the Prairie Village Jazz Festival, VillageFest, and local art shows, plus a seasonal Saturday farmers market near the Prairie Village Shops.
