Waldo is a neighborhood and business district in south-central Kansas City, Missouri, just south of Brookside and centered on 75th Street and Wornall Road. Its boundaries are informal and vary by source — a broad definition runs from Gregory Boulevard south to about 85th Street and from Holmes Road west to State Line — so the 'Waldo' name and the 64114 ZIP don't by themselves determine a property's schools or taxes.

The area is named for David Waldo, a physician and Santa Fe Trail freighter who bought Jackson County land beginning in 1841; the settlement that grew there took the Waldo name after his heirs sold land for development in 1885. A rail stop arrived in 1860 and streetcar service in 1907, and Kansas City progressively annexed the area through the early-to-mid 20th century.

Much of Waldo's housing dates from roughly the 1920s through the 1950s, spanning the streetcar era and Kansas City's southward expansion. The core Waldo area around 75th and Wornall is within Kansas City Public Schools (KCPS), but assignment is by exact address — not the neighborhood name or the 64114 ZIP — and the southern part of the broad Waldo area (roughly below 85th Street) can fall in the Center School District instead. Public charter and private schools are also options.

Getting Around

Wornall Road is the main north–south commercial corridor and 75th Street the main east–west route. The Harry Wiggins Trolley Track Trail links Waldo north through Brookside to the Plaza and UMKC and south toward 85th Street. From 75th and Wornall, Brookside's core is about 1.5 to 2 miles north, the Plaza about 4 to 5 miles, and downtown Kansas City about 8 miles — commonly 15 to 20 minutes by car.
